We’re Geeks Too!

We’re a law and tax firm built for creators, small businesses, fandom communities, and anyone brave enough to chase a big idea.

OUR STORY

The Geek Lawyer was created with a simple goal: to make legal and tax services accessible to the creators, small businesses, and fandom communities that traditional firms often overlook. Too many creative entrepreneurs fall through the cracks, not because their work isn’t meaningful, but because they don’t see themselves in the legal system, or don’t feel understood by the professionals they approach.

We believed there is a better way.

From helping small vendors at conventions to guiding game developers through IP protection, we saw a clear need for a firm that not only knows the law but also understands geek culture at its core. Our journey has taken us to conventions across the Southeast, collaborative events with creative communities, and countless one-on-one sessions where creators finally felt like they were being heard.

Today, The Geek Lawyer proudly serves clients across Georgia and beyond — providing legal and tax support to artists, makers, event organizers, writers, TTRPG creators, podcasters, streamers, small businesses, and fandom professionals of every kind.

MEET THE TEAM

The Geek Lawyer is a law firm powered by attorneys and CPAs who are as passionate about creativity, storytelling, and fandom as the people we serve. We know what it means to build something from scratch — whether that’s a business, a game world, a podcast, or an entire event — and we’re dedicated to helping creators grow and protect what they’ve built.

What sets us apart is simple: we live in the same worlds you do. We attend conventions, run games, write stories, play TTRPGs, stream content, and participate in the communities that define modern geek culture. When you talk about mechanics, licensing, worldbuilding, merch tables, vendor contracts, or creative rights, we understand exactly what you mean — because we’ve been there, too.

Our mission is to bridge the gap between creators and the legal/tax systems that affect them, without jargon, confusion, or gatekeeping. Just practical, clear support from people who get you.

Inspire Us With Your Adventure!

When you’re launching a business, running an event, creating original work, or building something entirely new, we’re here to protect your journey and help you level up with confidence.

James Dutton, Attorney

James is an attorney who blends deep legal experience with lifelong passion for gaming, storytelling, and creative entrepreneurship. He has advised businesses of all sizes, but his heart lies with creators, event organizers, and small businesses who are turning their passions into sustainable careers. When he’s not helping clients protect their ideas or structure their companies, you’ll probably find him behind a DM screen, attending a con panel, or collaborating on creative community projects.

Kristen Dutton, CPA

Kristen is a Certified Public Accountant with extensive experience in tax compliance, bookkeeping, and financial strategy for small businesses and creative professionals. She brings clarity to complicated financial questions and helps creators stay confident about their numbers. Kristen is a key part of our tax and bookkeeping team — and a dedicated geek who understands how creative pursuits intersect with the tax world more than most CPAs ever will.

Bridget Plott, Legal Assistant & Community Liaison

Bridget ensures the firm runs smoothly while also helping clients stay on track with filings, documents, and communication. She is deeply embedded in geek culture, attending conventions, assisting with community outreach, and ensuring creators feel supported from their first contact with the firm. Her dedication to client experience and community engagement helps make The Geek Lawyer accessible, friendly, and organized.

COMMUNITY

The Geek Lawyer isn’t just a firm — it’s part of the community. We attend conventions, speak on panels, host workshops, support local creators, and partner with organizations that strengthen geek culture. Whether we’re handing out business cards at a cosplay meetup or advising event organizers at a convention, we believe in showing up for the people we serve.

Our goal is to help creators and businesses thrive not just legally, but as part of a sustainable, supportive ecosystem. We believe fandom communities are powerful, innovative, and culturally significant — and we’re proud to help protect the people who make them possible.
